How to Grow a Pineapple Tree

    • 1). Buy a pineapple that has new leaves growing. Check for new leaves by separating the larger leaves and looking for bright, smaller leaves underneath.

    • 2). Cut off the top of your pineapple -- commonly referred to as the crown -- with a sharp knife, keeping a small amount of the fruit attached.

    • 3). Put the crown outdoors in the sun for a couple of days until the fruit on the bottom has dried out.

    • 4). Place stones at the bottom of the 8-inch pot, then add some gravel, to provide plenty of drainage. Fill the pot with soil containing organic matter. Plant your pineapple crown in the soil.

    • 5). Water your pineapple plant weekly until it is established and producing leaves. Pineapple plants absorb water through their leaves, so rather than pouring water into the soil, pour water over the leaves or use a spray bottle generously. After the plant is established, water only when the soil is very dry.

    • 6). Apply houseplant fertilizer every two months if you want the plant to bear fruit. Follow the label directions for application amounts.
