Gaming Mouse: Infrared Vs. Laser
- Resolution allows a gaming mouse to target more pixels on the computer's monitor. A gaming mouse's resolution is measured in dots per inches (dpi). A Laser mouse uses a high resolution laser to transmit data back to the monitor, while an Infrared mouse employs an infrared LED. A top-of-the-line Infrared mouse has the capability of 2000dpi, while a comparable Laser mouse has 3200dpi. While a Laser mouse allows for higher accuracy, it can prove to be too sensitive for some players.
- Mouse pads are used to provide a stable surface for computer mice to work on. An Infrared mouse needs a mouse pad to function properly, while a Laser mouse does not. Gamers who use laptops, or who simply desire greater flexibility, will find the Laser mouse better suited for their needs.
- A Laser mouse typically costs more than an Infrared mouse. As of August 2010, a typical Laser mouse can be bought for $35, while an Infrared mouse costs $25. A player on a budget might consider the Infrared mouse to be a better choice, regardless of performance.
