Preparing for Winter

As the weather turns it's important to make sure you're ready for the winter months and whatever hazards they might bring.Ice and snow in winter is an annoyance to many, and adds a huge amount of time onto journeys. The best thing to do is buy any bits you might need before winter kicks in, then sit back and enjoy as you power through the snow with a smile on your face. To get an idea of what might come in handy when you venture out, read this little list of essentials:Snow Socks/Snow Chains

When driving on ice or snow, it's almost impossible to gain any traction. In extreme snowy conditions, snow socks and snow chains will give you some much needed grip.Snow socks differ to chains as they're far lighter and easier to put on, meaning with the sporadic and sudden snowfall we get in the UK they're perfect. Despite the fact they're easy to install, it's always a good idea to practice in dry conditions. With snow chains you may need a hand putting them on and working out how best to fit them. Once they're on they'll be perfect for heavy snowfall, as the chain digs in and finds the best amount of grip available.Travel BlanketsThe last thing you want in bitterly cold weather is to be left stranded in the snow. If you're unfortunate enough for this to happen then make sure you're prepared, bring plenty of blankets with you and wait in the warmth to be rescued. Always make sure your phone is fully charged before you head out so you've got enough power to call breakdown services.Ice Grips for ShoesIn snow or ice the conditions are constantly treacherous for cars, but walking can be just as deadly. After snow has melted ice will form underneath, this causes many amusing, and often painful, falls. To avoid embarrassing or hurting yourself, ice grips are a great choice. Simply strap them over your shoes and let the studs give you that much needed grip.Sat Nav/MapIf you're travelling to a new destination or about to head off on a long journey, it's a good idea to bring a sat nav or map along with you. That way if you do break down you'll be able to let your rescue service know exactly where you are.

Don't Drive Unless You Have To!In these extreme conditions, unless the journey is life or death, don't venture outside. Stay indoors in the warmth and steer clear of putting yourself or others at risk.
