- 1). Prepare a pot that is larger than the current pot by at least 1 inch. The roots need room to grow, and the plant will thrive if it has a larger pot in which it can expand.
- 2). Add about a 1/2-inch layer of pea gravel in the bottom of the pot. If you have a saucer for your pot, place the pot inside the saucer before filling it with the gravel.
- 3). Put on your gardening gloves and scoop about 1 inch of potting soil on top of the pea gravel.
- 4). Snip roots if they grew in a circular pattern in the old pot and loosen the root-ball with your fingers.
- 5). Center the heather plant into the new pot and surround the plant and roots with potting soil, filling the pot until the soil reaches within 1 inch of the pot's rim.
- 6). Pat down the soil gently but don't pack it. Make sure the plant has enough soil supporting it to remain upright.
- 7). Water the plant well.
