How to Glaze Ceramics at Home
- 1). Use a damp rag to clean any dirt, dust and debris from your ceramic piece. Allow the ceramic piece to dry completely.
- 2). Lay down rags or towels to protect your workspace. Pour your chosen glaze into a bowl and dip your paintbrush into it.
- 3). Use smooth, even strokes to paint the glaze onto your ceramic piece. Begin at one side of the ceramic piece and work your way slowly over to the other.
- 4). Place your ceramic piece on a drying rack and allow your first layer of glaze to dry completely, following the directions accompanying your glaze.
- 5). Repeat Steps 3 and 4 for each layer of glaze you wish to apply. According to the Creative Glazers website, most glazes require several coats to achieve full coverage.
- 6). Place your ceramic piece on a drying rack and allow your final layer of glaze to dry completely. When it is dry, use the same paintbrush to wash the outside layer gently with clean water.
- 7). Fire your ceramic piece in a firing kiln according to the directions on your specific glaze. If you do not have a firing kiln at home, bring the ceramic piece to your local pottery shop, where you can have it fired.
