How Deep Should Regular Closets Be?
- 1). Take your clothing down from the closet rods and place it on your bed or another flat surface. Or, simply select just a few oversized and regular sized garments from the rack. This is a good idea when you have lots of clothes in a large walk-in closet, as it makes the process easier.
- 2). Measure the width of the clothing or garments while they are on the hanger. Write down the measurements.
- 3). Add two to three inches to this measurement to find the final depth for your closet so there is space on either side of the garment once it is hung in the closet. Most hangers are around 20 inches long, so depending on how thick the clothing is, your final measurement will be around 24 inches. This is the standard size depth of a closet.
- 4). Account for additional shelves, storage or any other factors that call for a deeper closet. This includes the hanging of new suits, trench coats or wider items like sleeping bags, blankets and rain coats. Measure the width of these items and then expand the closet to meet these new measurements as needed.
