How to Shop for '50s Clothing
- 1). Know the style. Familiarize yourself with the styles and even some of the popular designers from the time. For example, dresses from the 1950s had full skirts and famous designers of the time included Jacques Fath, Christobal Balenciaga, Coco Chanel and many more. Flower prints were more subtle in the '50s, as opposed to the bold and colorful flower prints of the '60s.
- 2). Check thrift stores. Choose a thrift store in a ritzy zip code -- it will ensure a greater bargain. Or seek out thrift stores in less cosmopolitan areas where the selection will be less picked through. If you look hard enough, you may be able to find something authentic.
- 3). Check vintage shops. This option will be more pricey, but you'll be more likely to get an authentic 1950s find and know it's from the '50s instead of it being a replica. Search for a vintage store that's out of the way so there will be a greater selection that hasn't been rummaged through as much as other stores in densely populated areas.

Bring your tape measure and know your measurements. Some vintage clothing might get damaged if you try to squeeze into the piece and it doesn't fit right. Save time and spare items from damage by bringing a tape measure. Remember that items that are a little too big for you can be altered. - 5). Inspect your clothing. Always check your clothing before buying. Make sure buttons aren't missing, fabrics don't have stains and seams aren't coming undone. Turn the item inside out as well, and continue your examination. If damage is found, assess if it can be fixed.
- 6). Check online. Try auction websites such as eBay or personal online stores such as Etsy for vintage '50s items, and know your measurements when shopping online. Clothing sizes should be slightly bigger than your actual measurements to allow breathing room. For example, if your waist is 29 inches, choose clothing with a waist that's 29 1/2 or 30 inches. Beware of replicas -- if a seller is selling the same dress in different sizes, it is probably a replica.
