    • Explore New Providence from a variety of viewpoints.Bahama Beach image by travellinbaen from Fotolia.com

New Providence is the Bahamas' largest island and home to its capital city of Nassau. Famously funky, the island reverberates with a colorful Caribbean vibe while mixing in Old World European history. Its close proximity to Florida's southeast coast makes New Providence an attractive destination for a quick getaway. While sun-drenched beaches and shallow sparkling waters rule the day, glitzy casinos and pulsating rhythms dominate the night. The 21-mile long by six-mile wide island is easy to explore and can be done from a variety of vantage points.

    Stuart Cove's SUB Adventure

    • New Providence is surrounded by gin-clear waters and shallow sandy reefs teeming with colorful underwater scenery. Novice aquanauts can experience the underwater realm via a Scenic Underwater Bubble (SUB) from Stuart Cove's. Resembling and underwater motorcycle, patrons can climb aboard a battery-operated SUB and explore the nearby reefs with their head encapsulated by a large oxygen-supplied plastic bubble. Safety divers ensure a moderate depth while riders have full control to maneuver around the coral reefs at a moderate clip. Stingrays, eels, sharks and turtles are all possible photo opportunities.

    Fort Fincastle

    • Panoramic views await visitors that ascend the Queen's Staircase en route to Fort Fincastle overlooking Nassau Harbour. The circa 1793 fort was built to defend the island from an attack that never came and the myriad cannons that stand sentry atop the hill have never fired a shot. A 125-foot water tower within the fort features an observation deck where the entire island can be surveyed with 360-degree panoramas. The tower is the highest point on New Providence Island. Admission is free and tours are self-guided. The fort is located on Elizabeth Avenue on the hillside behind the main harbour.
