Video: How to Do Braids Like Willow Smith

Video Transcript

Hi, I¡¯m T. Cooper. I¡¯m a New York City makeup artist, hairstylist, and co-founder of beauty and grooming company, Metro Look. Today, we¡¯re going to talk about how to do braids like Willow Smith. Now, I¡¯m taking some liberties here, because this hairstyle that I saw was totally cool, but her whole head was box braided, and my model¡I¡¯d be here all day and night if I wanted to box braid her whole head. But, I¡¯m going to give you ¡°the look,¡± because she had box braids that went up into braids. She braided the box braid. So, we¡¯re going to get the feel of the look. So, what I¡¯m going to do, I¡¯ve already put her hair in a ponytail with a bungee. And now, I¡¯m just going to take a piece of hair and I¡¯m going to wrap it around the bungee, because I hate it when hair ties and bungees and whatnot show ¨C that¡¯s so ¡®80s, and we aren¡¯t going there, honey. So, we¡¯re going to spray it just to make sure it stays put. And then, we¡¯re going to put a few pins in there just to tuck it out of the way. Now, we¡¯re going to take this ponytail and we¡¯re going to split it into two, and then we¡¯re going to make two braids. You want to braid this all the way down to the ends, as far down to the end as you can possibly get. And, you can either go in with a clear elastic, or you could tease the end. But, since we¡¯re working with such large sections of hair, I would prefer to use a clear elastic, but you can totally tease it. If you tease it enough and spray it enough, it will hold well, trust me, you have my word on that. But, I¡¯m not taking any chances today ¨C I¡¯m just going to take my clear elastic, and I¡¯m going to get another one ready because I¡¯m going to do the exact same thing with the other one. I¡¯m going to take this, and I¡¯m going to make a braid. And, for these braids, you want to braid kind of tight, because you¡¯re going to mold these braids into a shape ¨C so, you want to make them kind of tight. There we go. Now, I¡¯m to the bottom. I¡¯m going to go in with my lovely clear elastic. I¡¯m just going to band this off. Go around as many times as you need to until it¡¯s nice and tight. Now, for this style what I¡¯m going to do is I¡¯m going to spray the braids before I even do anything else, just to give them a little bit more stiffness. Now, what I¡¯m doing is I¡¯m going to pin the braid to the base where we put the ponytail. And, what we¡¯re doing is we¡¯re trying to make a heart shape. So, now this is nice and flat. Now, we go in and this is half of our heart right here. So, you see how that¡¯s coming in where it looks like half of a heart? So, we¡¯re going to go in and we¡¯re going to pin this, and I¡¯m going to actually pin into the braid, because I want it to stay put. So, there we go, half of the heart right there. So, now we¡¯re going to take this braid, and this is going to be our other half of the heart. And, what you¡¯re actually going to do is mold it so it looks like a heart, and we¡¯re going to pin inside of these two braids to just pin them together so that they stay together, just like that. And, if you have any ends or anything, you can just kind of tuck them. And then, you can just manipulate the braids until you get the heart shape that you want. And, as you can see, her hair is a heart! This is my favorite Willow Smith hairdo ¨C when she has her heart braids. I¡¯m T. Cooper, and thank you for watching.
