- 1). Contact a local propane company or dealer. Most dealers accept used tanks for recycling purposes, and may schedule a drop-off appointment for your unit. Larger companies may send a representative to your residence to pick up your used tank at no cost.
- 2). Bring your tank to a service station that sells propane units. Most gas and service stations that are licensed to sell propane will accept your used tank even if you did not purchase it from them.
- 3). Phone your local fire department and inquire about their propane disposal program. All stations are trained in the handling and disposal of hazardous materials, propane units included. You may be asked to drop it off, or they may be willing to perform pickup service.
- 4). Call your city's recycling center. While most centers do not accept large propane tanks, they may be able to take your small 1-lb. unit. If so, personally deliver it to a waste management employee at your scheduled curbside pickup time.
