How to Be Healthy by Taking Control of Your Life
- 1). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the first step towards being healthy is to maintain a healthy diet. The best way to do this is to make sure to eat enough fruits and vegetables each day. Incorporate fruits into your breakfasts and lunches, stock your home with healthy snacks and make sure every dinner has at least one vegetable. Cut down on the sweets and fatty foods, and eat more whole grains and lean meats.
- 2). In order to be healthy, it is also important to maintain a level of physical activity---at least 30 minutes of activity three times a week. Physical activity helps you maintain or lose weight, strengthens bones and muscles, improves your mood, and reduces your risk of developing illnesses related to a sedentary lifestyle. Find an activity you enjoy, like walking, swimming, tennis, weight-lifting, cycling, so you will be more apt to work out on a regular basis.
- 3). Avoid substances that weaken your immune system and harm your body, like drugs and tobacco products. Only drink alcohol in moderation.
- 4). Maintain dental health by brushing your teeth two to three times a day and flossing at least once. Visit your dentist for a cleaning twice a year. If you think you have a cavity, visit your dentist as soon as possible.
- 5). According to the American Heart Association, a key factor to leading a healthy lifestyle is to control your stress levels, as stress can have an adverse affect on your overall health. One of the best ways to combat stress is by laughing; hang out with your friends or family, be social and have fun. Other ways to combat stress are to try yoga or meditation. Take part in activities that you find enjoyable to help relieve some of your stress.
