When you and your partner are overwhelmed with the pressures of work, family and life, a romantic evening at home can recharge your batteries. In your own space, you don't have to worry about appearances, and you are free to relax together in comfort. As you plan, consider elements that will set the mood and require the least amount of maintenance from you so that you are free to enjoy the evening. - Nothing will ruin a romantic evening at home faster than a messy, cluttered house. The day before or the day of, make sure the house is scrubbed and that any clothing, toys and books are picked up and moved out of sight. When you have a clean house, the romantic mood will not be marred by the sight of laundry or dirty dishes in the sink.
- Soft lighting is flattering. When you feel attractive, it is easier to get into the romantic spirit of a night at home. Turn off ceiling lights or use a dimmer switch to lower them to a soft level. Place candles around the house and use scented versions to spread a soft scent through the room. If you have a fireplace, light a fire. If not, use a low metal serving tray topped with a number of thick candles to mimic the effect of a flickering fire.
- During a romantic evening at home, turn off all of the electronic gadgets that serve as distractions. By shutting off televisions, cell phones, computers and unplugging land lines, you will cut out the rest of the world so you can focus on the evening. Send kids out to sleep over at a friend's house or to visit their grandparents so you will have the house to yourselves. Without distractions, your home will become a place to relax and be together in a pressure-free environment.
- Instead of stressing out about cooking a fancy dinner, choose a low-key option and organize a living room picnic. Lay out a blanket on the floor or use the coffee table for food and get takeout from your favorite restaurant. Lounge on cushions and open a bottle of wine to enjoy during a long, leisurely meal that is not possible when children and schedules are pressing. Put candles on the table for light or string a few strands of Christmas lights across the fireplace or television.
