How to Error Check a DSL Line Online

    • 1). Perform a "Tweak Test" to check if the computer's broadband TCP connection settings are correct. Use the online Tweak Test provided by the DSL Reports website. Click the "Start" button to begin the test and wait for it to finish. Click the "Results" button when prompted to view the findings. Scroll down to view suggested measures to take under the Notes and Recommendations section.

    • 2). Perform a Line Quality test to diagnose errors having to do with packet loss, latency or ISP congestion. Register for a free DSL Reports account and then log in to the website. Click the "Tools" button and select the "Line Quality" tab. Click the "Join Que" button at the bottom of the page to wait in a virtual line for a turn to use the tool. Make sure to click the "Next" button on the following page to begin the test. Use the results and follow the on-screen instructions for fixing the errors found.

    • 3). Perform an Internet speed test to determine if the DSL line's connection is performing at the same speed claimed by the DSL service provider. You can use the Use the Speed Test provided on the DSL Reports website. Other Internet speed test websites include AuditMyPc, Speakeasy and SpeedTest. All major DSL service providers also offer speed tests on their company websites. Contact your provider for more details.
