Dramatic, colorful images make you want to jump into the picture

This book has some beautiful images of locales and activities being discussed, which make you want to pop right into the picture. Alongside descriptions of trips there are colorful sidebars that give you interesting tidbits of information about experiences during the trip, or why the trip may have been chosen. For example, you'll learn about the restoration of Florida's Everglades, in the sidebar next to the Paddling the Everglades trip.

Ultimate Adventures - a Rough Guide to Adventure Travel Is Easy Reading

The books is well laid out, so it's easy to read and collect information about specific trips quickly. The trips are spread among all the continents and encompass a wide variety of activities and experiences. Check out the "The Best of the Best" section, which pulls out types of experiences, such as "Feats of a Lifetime," "Family-Friendly Adventures," "Photo Ops," "Energy and Endurance," and "Mental Toughness."

Ultimate Adventures,- a Rough Guide to Adventure Travel has a 1- to 5-star chart detailing physical, skill, psychological and "wow" factors, which is designed to help you decide which trips are best for you.

Each of the adventure travel experiences has an "Is this for me?" box, which lists the appropriate number of stars for that trip. For example, in the Sea Kayaking in Thailand's Phang Nga Bay trip the "Is this for me?" Box, has three stars each for physical, psych and skill, while the "wow" factor is four. (Remember the villain's hideaway on a sheer-side island in a beautiful bay in the James Bond flick: Man With a Golden Gun? It was filmed here.)

The trips have a "Need to Know" box which gives the nitty-gritty on booking or arranging a trip, from Web sites and phone numbers for companies that offer these trips, to choosing guides and gear. At the back of the book there's a chart listing the 177 adventures and the best time of year to do them.

The author of Ultimate Adventures is a true adventurer

Author Greg Witt says he hasn't done every single adventure in the book but he's certainly done dozens of them. His favorite five trips in the book:
  • Tracking mountain gorillas in Rwanda
  • Running the Colorado river through the Grand Canyon in a dory
  • Hiking in the Swiss Alps (and climbing the Matterhorn or Mount Blanc as part of the trip)
  • Hiking New Zealand's Milford Track
  • Rafting the Pacuare in Costa Rica (great river and wildlife viewing in one day)

This is just one of Greg Witt's books that have been published by Rough Guides. He also owns a company that specializes in hiking, trekking, and photographic adventures in the Alps. Here are his picks for 5 Great Day Hikes in the Swiss Alps
