How to Cut Slate Tile Out of a Floor

    • 1). Open all doors and windows to the area where you will be doing the work. Cutting out slate tile is a dusty process, and you will need as much ventilation as possible.

    • 2). Put on your protective gear. Using your 4" grinder, cut out the grout joints around the tile in question, being careful not to cut too deep into the substrate below the actual tile.

    • 3). Use your hammer and chisel to chip a hole in the center of the piece you are removing. Do not start at the outside edge of the tile, or you run the risk of accidentally chipping an edge of an adjoining piece. Start in the center and work your way out toward the channel you just cut with the grinder in the grout joint.

    • 4). Remove all the excess pieces of slate. Use your hammer and chisel to clear any remaining thinset and tile fragments from the empty space, all the way down to the substrate. Use a utility knife to clear away the grout from the grout joints of the adjoining tiles to prepare for installation of a new piece of slate tile.

    • 5). Use your broom and dustpan to clean up any of the remaining fragments, and to clean the area.
