How to Build a Steep Grade Roof Deck

    • 1). Erect scaffolding under the eaves of the rafters. Position the scaffolding to provide a comfortable work surface with the eave ends of the rafters about waste high.

    • 2). Use a mechanized lifter to raise the roof deck to the scaffolding level. These machines resemble a forklift and are used in the construction industry. In the absence of a mechanized lifter two people can work together to lift the plywood or Oriented Strand Board to the scaffolding where two other individuals can grasp the material and lift it onto the rafters.

    • 3). Place the roof decking on the rafters flush with the ends of the rafters. Continue to place a course of the roof deck sheathing across the entire lower edge of the rafters. You should be able to position and nail the sheets in place while standing on the scaffolding.

    • 4). Nail a toeboard to the roof deck along the edge of the roof. Nail a 2-by-4-inch board nailed flat on the roofing deck with 16d nails. Place another 2-by-4-inch board on edge against the flat toeboard. Nail this to the flat board with 16d nails. This roughly 4-inch high barrier should stop any tools, building material or people from sliding down the roof and to the ground.

    • 5). Add the next course of roof sheathing above the first. Brace yourself on the toeboard while working.

    • 6). Add additional toeboards to the roof deck as you work up the steep slope of the roof deck. In most situations, the roof is too steep to stand and walk on. You work with your feet braced against the toeboard and kneel on the roof material.

    • 7). Remove the toeboards from top to bottom after the roof deck is complete. Remove the bottom toeboard while standing on the scaffolding.
