What Is Linoleum Flooring?

    History

    • In 1860 linoleum was invented by Frederick Walton. He later put together a company that manufactured linoleum.

    Benefits

    • Linoleum is made from organic materials, so people with allergies find it easier to live with than other options. It is water resistant, so if something is spilled, cleaning is easy.

    Locations

    • Linoleum can be used in hospitals, health-care facilities, and homes for people with allergies. At one point it was used in battleships, but it was deemed too flammable.

    Types

    • Inlaid linoleum, which is the best quality of linoleum, is extremely durable. The cheaper linoleum is made from less durable materials in thinner layers, which makes it easier to tear and crack.

    Replaced

    • Most linoleum has been replaced by flooring that is less flammable, such as vinyl, which is brighter and less flammable than linoleum.
