How Do I Monitor Internet Use?

    • 1). Install Internet monitoring software on the computer your family uses the most. You'll find both free software and software that you'll need to purchase. Some common names in Internet monitoring software include Net Nanny, SafeEyes, CyberSitter and SurfControl (see Resources). Each type of software has different installation and setup instructions, so follow the directions carefully.

    • 2). Set your permissions. As a parent or head of household, you'll need to protect your software with a password that only you would know. That way, no one can change the permissions or blocked sites without your permission. Some Internet monitoring sites can even tell you when someone has tried to log into the software. Use the service to decide when to monitor the computer and which sites to block completely.

    • 3). Print detailed reports using the software features. Most monitoring software allows you to choose a set block of time or a user to monitor. During that time, the software will track and save all activity, even activity that someone has deleted from the Internet history. You can view the usage using the Internet monitoring software on your computer, or print out reports to look over.

    • 4). Utilize your reports as a catalyst to talk to your family about safe and acceptable Internet usage. Noticing patterns of social networking sites, chat rooms or emails may give you a chance to talk about being safe on the Internet. Seeing repeated attempts to access blocked sites makes for a frank conversation about acceptable Internet usage. Once you begin to monitor the Internet, ensure that you use the information to protect your family and your home.

    • 5). Move the computer into a central area of the home if Internet usage continues to be a problem. Although Internet monitoring software can tell you what has been done while family members are using the computer, monitoring usage with your own eyes can stop unacceptable usage before it occurs.
