NuvaRing FAQs

How do I insert and remove NuvaRing?

    • Wash and dry the hands thoroughly before inserting NuvaRing. Using the index finger and thumb, press the sides of the vaginal rings together. Push this folded ring into the vagina. There is no proper position for NuvaRing to be effective as long as it is inside.

To remove NuvaRing, hold the index finger under the rim of the vaginal ring and gently pull. Dispose of the vaginal ring; never reuse one as it will not be effective in preventing conception. Insert a new ring no more than seven days after removing the prior one.

What should I do if NuvaRing slips out?

    • There are some times when the vaginal ring may slip out of the body. If this happens and you discover it within three hours, rinse the vaginal ring with cool or lukewarm water and reinsert it immediately.

If more than three hours passes between the NuvaRing leaving your body and your becoming aware of it, either insert a new NuvaRing as soon as possible or let your monthly period pass and then insert a new ring within seven days of losing the previous one. Also, use a secondary birth control method for seven days, as effectiveness of the vaginal ring may be reduced.

If this happens to you more than once, consult your OB/GYN as you may have additional health problems causing this to occur.

What does NuvaRing feel like inside?

    • Most women report they don't feel it when it is inside. The vaginal ring molds to the body and your vaginal muscles will help keep it inside you. If you do feel discomfort, you may not have it properly inserted. Use your finger to gently push the NuvaRing around or farther in until you are comfortable. There is no danger of losing it in your body or pushing NuvaRing too far in, as your cervix will block it and keep that from happening.

What should I avoid while using NuvaRing?

    • Women who smoke increase their risk of cardiovascular disease as a result of using this birth control method. Do not breastfeed when using NuvaRing as the hormones can be passed through breast milk. Some medications may also reduce the effectiveness of NuvaRing. This makes consulting a doctor before using NuvaRing especially important. Also, never use a diaphragm as a secondary method of birth control while using NuvaRing as it may affect the placement and effectiveness of the ring.

    Will NuvaRing fall out?

    • After inserting the vaginal ring, the body will get used to its placement and the vaginal muscles will hold NuvaRaring inside. This remains true when one is sleeping, exercising or showering. If you are afraid that NuvaRing will come out, insert your finger inside and make sure it is in a position that is both comfortable and far inside you.
