- 1). Replace your standard sound card with one that has the connections for external microphones beyond just a computer microphone. These types of cards are sometimes called 24/96 cards, which stands for the highest quality setting of audio that can be recorded on them.
- 2). Plug a mixer into the sound card. You can connect a physical audio mixer using the output from the mixer instead of connecting the microphone directly to the card.
- 3). Connect a microphone to the mixer. Make sure the mixer and microphone are turned on. You can change what gets input into the sound card by playing with the mixer controls and you can monitor the sound directly from the mixer as well.
- 4). Install audio recording software such as Audacity. Run the software and you can record and monitor the audio through the software.
