- 1). Plant peonies in a garden area that receives six to eight hours of sun per day. Peonies in a shady area will not flower well. Mature plants reach 2 to 4 feet in height, according to their individual cultivar characteristics.
- 2). Dig a hole two times the depth and width of the peony root ball. Add one shovelful of compost to the hole. Place the peony in the hole with the main plant trunk at ground level. Add dirt to cover, pressing it down firmly.
- 3). Soak thoroughly. Water as needed when topsoil becomes dry.
- 4). Remove spent flowers after blooming. Plants die back after the first frost. Prune foliage to the ground.
