Birth Pool
Many women choose to use a birth pool before and during labour as it can help you relax and is a good way to help ease your pain and discomfort. There are places that offer birth pool hire if you want to use a birth pool at home or many hospitals have a birth pool but it is not guaranteed to be available when you are in labour. If you are certain that you want to use a birth pool and you have no other complications to stop you then you are best to hire a birth pool for your home to guarantee it will be available.
If you want to give birth in a birth pool you will only be able to have gas and air for pain relief. If you feel you need stronger pain relief you would have to get out of the pool. One of the reasons that many women choose to use a birth pool is because they don't want to use any medical pain relief and want a completely natural birth. Being in the water during labour and pregnancy is thought to be much more comfortable for many women and can make them feel more calm and relaxed. The water helps to relax your muscles and take the strain off your legs and back during contractions.
If you have decided that you want a home birth then birth pool hire is available and is probably the best option for a home birth. You will need to discuss this with your midwife and see if she is happy and agrees that it will be a safe choice for you. It is only really an option if you have had no complications during your pregnancy and non are anticipated for the birth. If you hire a birth pool then you have it ready in plenty of time before the expected delivery date. This way you can then use the birth pool in the time leading up to your labour to relax and get comfortable especially if you cannot sleep well. If you want to just use the pool during labour but not actually give birth in the pool then this is an option many women choose.
Your midwife will be able to advise you of where you can get birth pool hire from. It is possible for your birthing partner to be in the pool with you at any time if this is your wishes. They can even help to deliver the baby which can be a very special experience for you and your partner.
