Bay Window Decor Ideas

    Draperies and Curtains

    • You can use almost any kind of window treatment on a bay window, from pull-down shades to elaborate draperies. Consider the view, both from the inside and outside of the window. Choose Roman shades, indoor shutters or long curtains, which can be opened during the day and closed at night. If you want a fancier look, choose a valance to hang on top of the windows rather than drapery that hangs in front of them.

    Window Seat

    • A built-in bay window seat gives you a prime spot for relaxing, gazing outdoors or reading in natural light. It's almost like sitting in a sun room. A built-in window seat is also an inconspicuous way to add storage to a living room or family room; it's basically box-shaped to fit the half-hexagon shape of the bay window. It can have cabinet doors on the front or a hidden lid under the cushion. Look for project plans online or hire a carpenter to make and install one.

    Plants

    • A shelf unit built into a bay window can help you cultivate and display indoor plants and flowers. You can even transform your bay window into a greenhouse for small-scale indoor gardening. If your bay window has open space all the way to the floor, you can put a large indoor palm or other tall houseplant in the space or you can hang potted plants from the ceiling.

    Holiday Decorating

    • A bay window allows you to do some impressive holiday decorating. Utilize the three-window space and place your Christmas tree or menorah in the window -- from the outside, people will be able to see it from three angles. If you have a bay window seat or shelf, use it to hold holiday cushions and decorations for inside-outside display. String mini-lights around the window on the inside for a twinkling glow that can also be seen from the outside.
