How to Cook Hot Cereals to the Right Consistency

Things You'll Need

Instructions

1

Boil water in your pot. The consistency of your hot cereal will depend on your preference. If you want thicker cereal, add less water. If you want thinner oatmeal, add more water. So start with a 1 to 2 ratio of oatmeal to water. In other words, for every cup of oatmeal, add about 2 cups of water. Make sure you boil the water first, and then add the oatmeal.
2

Stir the oatmeal and water together to avoid clumping and to prevent the cereal from sticking and burning in your pot. Keep the heat low to medium.
3

Check that the consistency is right for you. If you want the oatmeal to be thicker, put the pot on the stove for a longer time and slowly mix it to the consistency of your choice. If the oatmeal is too thick, add water a little at a time until it thins to your liking.
4

Take the pot off the stove and pour the hot cereal into the bowl. Add your toppings and dig in.
