Casa Cavé
Introduction to Casa Cavé:
Casa Cavé (also known as Confeitaria Cavé), founded in 1860, is the oldest coffee and pastry shop in Rio de Janeiro.
Like Confeitaria Colombo (founded in 1894), another coffee shop in Rio's historic center, Casa Cavé is a symbol of carioca Belle Époque. Stop by for some retro pastries, a cup of coffee and some quiet time amidst vintage chandeliers and stained glass.
The coffee shop has a branch on Rua Uruguaiana, also in Centro Histórico, with counter service only.
Casa Cavé History:
The building occupied by Casa Cavé is part of Rio's most precious architectural heritage, but it's not the one which originally housed the coffee shop. Today's location was once a hat shop: Chapelaria Radiante, opened in 1929.
Frenchman Charles Auguste Cavé opened his coffee shop in a building on the corner of Rua Sete de Setembro and Rua Uruguaiana. Cavé sold his business in 1922, but Casa Cavé stayed in the original location until 2000, when the building was sold and closed.
Food at Casa Cavé:
Start with a salty snack such as codfih cakes (bolinhos de bacalhau), coxinhas or baked turnovers (pastel assado).
Then try one of several retro sweets and cookies; Casa Cavé has great philo dough offerings such as alunete, mil-folhas, and jalusi. Casa Cavé is also a great place to try a quindim.
There's also a range of Portuguese sweets - for example, pastel de Belém, toucinho do céu, or queijadinha de Évora, this one made with queijo Minas, coconut and cinnamon.
