Not-So-Hidden, Old-Timer Eatery in Historic Downtown Rio
Updated on June 25, 2014
"Escondidinho" refers to something or someone who's hiding. The Escondidinho restaurant in Rio de Janeiro's historic center, tucked away in one of the city's oldest streets, is no secret to locals and international foodies in the know.
Opened in 1947, the restaurant is in Beco dos Barbeiros ("Barbers' Alley"), a street dating back to the 18th century, when barbers pulled teeth and treated various ailments by bloodletting and leech therapy.
Much more pleasant experiences await customers at Beco dos Barbeiros 12. The ribs, served with egg or watercress farofa and fried cassava in portions which feed up to three not-so-big eaters, are among the simple restaurant's top offerings. Other Escondidinho classics are the daily lunch specials such as rabada (ox tail) on Tuesday and moqueca on Friday. The menu has plenty of options serving two or more people in the $20-$30 range.
Reservations are not necessary. But arrive early and/or be patient: Escondidinho is popular with people who work in Old Downtown and a full house is to be expected.
Mastercard and Visa accepted.
