Beach Sunsets and Budget Finds on São Paulo's North Shore

Boiçucanga, one of the beaches on the southern coast of São Sebastião (a stretch known as Costa dos Alcatrazes), is one of the great options for vacations on São Paulo's North Shore.
In a country where the whole of the Atlantic coast faces the east, Boiçucanga is a rare beach where you can watch the sunset. Located between Maresias and Camburi, without the great surfing conditions of the first and with coarser sands than the latter, the beach is fine for relaxation, getting a sun tan and walking (make it easier on your legs by staying closer to the sea, where the sand is more firmly packed).
Boiçucanga is also one of the North Shore beaches closest to BR-101. You can stay in Boiçucanga, take the beach bus or drive to explore the other beaches on the North Shore, or stop by for an affordable lunch, a bit of hiking - or a lovely sunset with your one and only.

Ask at your pousada about hiking to Praia Brava - a small and pristine beach sandwiched between Boiçucanga and Maresias - or local waterfalls, of which the most famous are the ones on Ribeirão do Itu.
Don't think twice: the clubs are next beach in Maresias (Sirena) and Camburi (O Galeão). Party all night so you can come back to Boiçucanga in broad daylight.
Boiçucanga is about 93 miles from São Paulo.
Litorânea (a Pássaro Marron company) has buses to Boiçucanga departing from the Tietê bus terminal four times a day (6:30 a.m., 11:30 a.m., 6:30 p.m. and 9:30 p.m.; schedule subject to change) The ticket costs R$ 35,20. The bus stops at a small Litorânea station at the farthest end of the beach.
From Boiçucanga to São Paulo, there are buses at 5 a.m., 9 a.m., 4 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. to the Tietê bus terminal. The ticket costs R$ 30,90 (July 2010 price; schedule and fare subject to change).
Boiçucanga has several affordable eateries. You can also take advantage of the fact that so many of the local pousadas have apartments with kitchens and save some money by shopping at the local supermarket.
Next to the supermarket, Shopping Boiçucanga, the local shopping center, has a pleasant food court with a couple of kilo restaurants.
One of the best options for fresh and simple seafood dishes is Cheiro Verde (Rua Benjamin Manuel dos Santos 74, phone 55-18-3865-2280).
For great ice cream, don't miss the local Rochinha store at Shopping Boiçucanga.
The best hotel in Boiçucanga has Standard, Luxury and Master suites, all with tile floors, A/C and king size beds. Master suites afford sea views and have 26-inch LCD screen TVs. Some can accommodate a family with two kids.

This cheerfully decorated toes-in-the-sand is popular with families. So popular, in fact, that some well-off clans have taken to booking the whole pousada for special holidays such as New Year’s Eve. The two-story pousada has suites with ceiling fans or A/C, mini refrigerators, safe deposit boxes and verandas – the ground floor suites come with a hammock.
Some suites can be conjugated, creating an apartment with a full kitchen which fits a large family or six adults. Amenities include a pool, a karaoke room, a game room, nice gardens, a deck and a breakfast room facing the sea.
You won’t be right on the beach, but walk a few blocks and you’ll be surrounded by lush native vegetation if you stay at Vila da Mata, whose name means "forest villa". This unique, finely decorated pousada has 11 suites and two apartments surrounded by Atlantic rainforest. There are three pools (one of them heated), a zen gazebo, a restaurant and a bar just for guests.
The chalets have amenities such as 200 thread count sheets, goose feather pillows, wireless internet and HBO.
