Negatives of Drinking Distilled Water

    Fasting and Distilled Water

    • People undergoing a fast regardless of whether for detoxification purposes or spiritual purposes, might choose to drink distilled water, believing it to be the healthy choice. However, distilled water consumed during a period of fasting can be dangerous because the water lacks electrolytes (Potassium, sodium, chloride) and trace minerals (calcium, magnesium). These deficiencies can lead to irregularities in the heart beat and high blood pressure. Distilled water acts as an absorbent; when in contact with air it absorbs carbon dioxide making it acidic. The higher the amount of consumed distilled water, the higher the body's acidity levels will rise.

    Minerals Loss

    • Some of the most toxic beverages available commercially, like colas and soft drinks, are made from distilled water. Heavy consumers of these drinks, regardless of the drink's sugar content, lose large amounts of magnesium, calcium and other trace minerals through their urine. The loss of essential minerals from the body causes a great risk for hypothyroidism, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, high blood pressure, coronary artery disease and other degenerative diseases linked to premature aging.

    Association with Cardiovascular Disease

    • The higher the amount of distilled water consumed over long periods of time, the more likely a person is to develop mineral deficiencies. They are also likely to have higher levels of acid waste in the system. Cells, organs and tissues cannot remain healthy when steeped in acid; they protest by removing the minerals from the human skeleton. Another problem linked to the increased levels of acidity in the body is the manufacturing of bicarbonate in the blood. High levels of bicarbonate are linked to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, Cushing's disease, Conn's syndrome and heart disease.

    Taste

    • Some people, who drink distilled water, claim that the bland or flat taste it leaves behind is distasteful. The trace minerals that are removed from the water through the distillation process are minerals that are good for the body like magnesium and calcium and that give the water some flavor. The lack of oxygen in the water and the plastic containers used to store the water can also add to its flat taste. Distilled water under the old production system did have a slightly off taste; however, new methods of technology such as the use of carbon filters have made an improvement to the way the water tastes.
