About Macro-Enabled Files in Office 2007
- Office 2007 programs that provide support for macro-enabled files include Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Project and Visio.
- Macro-enabled Office 2007 files include an "m" as the last character in the file extension name. For example, the file extension for an Office 2007 Word document is ".docx;" for a Word template is ".dotx." Macro-enabled Word document and template file extensions are ".docm" and ".dotm," respectively.
- Options for creating macros depend on the Office application you use. With the exception of the Visio application, enabling the Developer tab on the Office 2007 Ribbon allows you to write macros using Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). In addition, Word, Excel, Project, and Visio can use a Macro Recorder.
- To use a macro, either select the macro name from a list in the "Macros" section of the Developer tab, or press a keyboard shortcut you created to activate the macro and complete its action.
- Macro-enabled files on the Web, or those you receive via email (usually as an attachment), can contain malicious code designed to harm your files and computer system. Office 2007 provides security settings for macro files in the applications "Tools" menu and recommends you set Office 2007 programs to a minimum "Medium" setting.
