How to Compute Towing Capacity

    • 1). Open the owner's manual for the vehicle and turn to the "Capacities" section. The maximum towing capacity for the vehicle is listed in lbs.

    • 2). Look closely at the hitch fastened to the rear of the vehicle for its class. Common class towing capacities are: Class I (up to 2,000 lbs.), Class II (up to 3,500 lbs.), Class III (up to 5,000 lbs.) and Class IV (up to 10,000 lbs.).

    • 3). Compare the vehicle towing capacity to the hitch capacity. The maximum towing capacity is limited by the weak link in the chain: Whichever number is lower is the weight the vehicle can tow safely.
