Definition:

Originally known as iTools, .Mac was a collection of online services and software for Mac users.

.Mac Services

  • HomePage: A web hosting service that allowed Mac users to easily design and publish their personal web pages.
  • iDisk: Online data storage.
  • Email: .Mac users were able to register an email address (username@mac.com). The email system supported both POP and IMAP mail services, as well as a web-based mail system.


  • iCards: Online greeting cards that .Mac users could send to anyone with an email address.
  • Backup: An application that would back up data from the Mac to your iDisk, or to a CD or DVD.
  • MacAfee Virex: A virus scanning service.
  • Web Gallery: A service for storing and viewing images online. Web Gallery could also produce slide shows.

.Mac History

  • Apple launched iTools as a free service on January 5, 2000.
  • iTools renamed to .Mac and converted to a paid subscription service on July 17, 2002.
  • Apple relaunched .Mac on July 9, 2008 as MobileMe, with new features for Macs and Windows, as well as the new iPod touch and iPhone.
