How to Choose a Tile Installer

    • 1). Review the contractor's qualifications and training, which should include classes in mathematics as well as experience in carpentry. The tile installer should have in-depth knowledge of different types of tile as well as have existing relationships with tile suppliers in order to suggest tile options that might work better for your project or save you money.

    • 2). Review the quality of the contractor's previous jobs by contacting the contractor's references and reviewing the portfolio. The contractor should show expertise in simple and complex tile jobs, and former clients should offer feedback on installation time, price and overall satisfaction.

    • 3). Review the contractor's tools, and select one who uses a wet saw. Wet saws allow a contractor to cut ceramic tile in more precise shapes with straighter lines. Manual tile cutters and nippers require more time and crack more tiles.

    • 4). Review the contractor's certification, and look for a National Tile Contractors Association (NTCA) or a Tile Contractor Association of America (TCAA) national membership. NTCA and TCAA contractors undergo ongoing training.

    • 5). Compare rates, and look for a fee structure of $11 to $22 per square foot (sf) for ceramic tile and $2.50 to $5.50 sf for vinyl tile.

    • 6). Obtain references from your county clerk's office because sometimes they can recommend tile contractors that have the proper licenses.
