Full Basement vs. Walkout Basement
- A full basement and walkout basement can have the same amount of space for storage, depending on how the rooms are laid out. One disadvantage of the walkout basement in terms of storage is the fact that it has to have a doorway. Normally, storing items in front of a doorway is a bad idea, because it makes the doorway unusable. If you are seeking more storage space, choose a full basement, because it offers the most storage room.
- A walkout basement is more livable simply because it has a door and windows that let in light. Windows also provide fresh air, and with a door installed on one wall, you are more likely to use the basement for everyday activities. It often becomes like a mud room, but if you decorate it with paintings and add furniture, it will also provide entertainment space and even party space because it is so accessible.
- A full basement is often refinished to include a recreation or entertainment center, a bar, ping pong table or music equipment. It takes a substantial commitment to refinish a full basement, because it involves erecting walls and laying down carpet. The same effort goes into a walkout basement if the basement is not prefinished. In some homes a walkout basement is already finished because it is built to be an accessible part of the house.
- A few common problems affect the different types of basements in different ways. A full basement is enclosed, so moisture buildup is an issue. If moisture seeps through the walls, it collects inside the basement and only a dehumidifier will remove it. In a walkout basement, moisture will escape through the doors and windows when used, so the basement may not retain as much moisture. However, a dehumidifier is necessary to keep moisture levels modest in the walkout basement, especially during the winter and summer months when moisture is high.
