How to Highlight Hair to Disguise the Gray
- 1). Choose a highlighting kit that is a few tones lighter than your natural color. For example, if you’re naturally a dirty blond, choose a light blond with which to highlight. Be careful not to buy plain hair dye; the highlighting kits come with a special comb that you need for highlighting.
- 2). Wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner prior to using the highlighting kit. Allow the hair to air-dry. Any oils in your hair can affect how well the dye works.
- 3). Open the highlighting kit and put on the rubber gloves that come with it; these prevent your hands from becoming stained.
- 4). Mix the hair highlighting mixture according to the manufacturer’s directions and dip the highlighting comb in the mixture.
- 5). Lightly comb the dye into your hair, focusing on any area that has a high number of gray hairs. You do not want the dye to get on all of your hair, only small sections, so it is highlighted. Repeat this until you’ve highlighted sections of your hair across the entire scalp.
- 6). Look at the clock and allow the dye to stay in your hair for as long as directed on the box. Be careful not to leave the highlighting mixture in for longer, this can damage your hair.
- 7). Rinse the mixture from your hair and allow it to dry; the gray hairs will now be nearly unnoticeable among the highlighting effects. Style as usual.
