How to Remodel a Coat Closet

    • 1). Assess the current layout and functionality of the coat closet. Decide what works well and which areas need improvement. Consider the types of items stored in the coat closet.

    • 2). Remove all of the items in the coat closet. Pull out any shelves and closet rods in the coat closet. This gives you a clean slate for the coat closet remodel.

    • 3). Clean the floors and walls of the closet thoroughly. Cleaning freshens the closet and helps paint stick better.

    • 4). Paint the inside of the closet with a light color. Paint all of the walls and the ceiling.

    • 5). Inspect the current light fixture. Replace it with a brighter fixture if you find it doesn't cast enough light in the closet. If you don't have a light, hire an electrician to install one for easier location of items in the closet. Another option is to install battery-operated LED lights which don't require any wiring.

    • 6). Decide how you want to store the items in the coat closet. A closet rod, shelf, shoe rack, baskets for smaller items and hooks for scarves and hats are common options. You can also purchase a closet organizing kit for the coat closet. Choose one that works best with your coat closet contents.

    • 7). Install the selected closet organizers. Replace the contents of the coat closet.
