Yangon Shopping: Yangon’s Best Shopping Opportunities

Yangon is Myanmar's largest city and has some excellent shopping opportunities that will keep visitors to the historic city entertained for days. The shopping scene is largely centred around the many market centres that are located throughout the city. Whilst there are not the luxurious shopping centres in Yangon that will be found in the cities of neighbouring Thailand, there are still some excellent opportunities to enjoy great shopping in Yangon. A number of Yangon hotels are located nearby some of the best shopping areas in the city.

Markets

There are many markets in Yangon, and most of the best and most interesting shopping opportunities are found at these markets. Markets are usually open every day, and are always alive with people buying and selling their wares.

Bogyoke Aung San Market

The Bogyoke Aung San Market is perhaps the most well known market in Yangon. The market centre is housed in a stunning colonial building in the middle of Yangon's downtown area. The market sells absolutely everything, and is popular with locals and tourists alike. The market consists of two levels and is jammed packed with stores and people.

Teingyl Zei Market

Teingyl Zei Market is a very local style of market. It is not as touristy as other markets in Yangon, making it a great place to come and experience the true local market culture. This is a market where many locals come to do their daily shopping, so you will find a great range of fresh produce and food items. There are also some wonderful religious items and textiles available at this market.

Chinatown Market

The Chinatown Market is located in downtown Yangon. It is a very busy market, and is well known as the place to come for jewellery and gold. The Chinatown Market opens at 3pm and closes at 9pm. It is also a great place to come to buy some of the freshest tropical fruit to enjoy.

Shopping Centres

Whilst Yangon does not have the shopping centres that wow visitors with their opulence, there are nevertheless a large number of local shopping centres that sell a good variety of western products as well as more local items.

FMI Shopping Centre

FMI is a downtown shopping centre that is one of the biggest shopping centres in Yangon. The first three floors are dedicated to retails stores that sell both western and Burmese style clothes and accessories for both men and women. A number of other goods such as computers and musical items are also sold at FMI Shopping Centre.

Yuzana Plaza

The Yuzana Plaza is a modern shopping complex that has a dedicated wholesale area on the ground floor. On the second floor you will be able to find a variety of shops selling clothes, jewellery and household appliances.

North Point Shopping Centre

North Point Shopping Centres is located on the busy Pyay Road in Yangon. It is one of the most spacious shopping centres in Yangon, and is popular with young locals who are looking to buy international and local labels. There is a good range of electrical appliance stores as well as some delicious food courts selling a range of cuisines.

Temple Shopping Areas

A number of temples are found in Yangon. At the front of these temples are some excellent areas to enjoy some great souvenir shopping. All of the major temples will have an area that you can walk through and pick up some excellent gifts before or after entering the temple.

Shwedagon Pagoda
Shwedagon Pagoda is the most famous temple and tourist attraction in Yangon. There is a fantastic hall leading to the entrance of the temple that is full of stores selling all kinds of souvenirs and gifts. Some beautiful paintings and religious ornaments are available at these stores for great prices.
