Corn Plant Density

    Variety

    • Corn can be divided into three genetic categories. The standard sweet corn variety produces sweet kernels that are very creamy. However, this variety does not store well. The sugary enhancer is the preferred variety for many home gardeners as it combines a sweeter taste with a creamy texture. The final variety, supersweet corn, has a distinctly less creamy texture, with a tougher husk. This variety is best for frozen corn.

    Number of Rows

    • Corn grows best when there are other corn plants of the same variety nearby so that the plants can cross-pollinate with corn from the same variety. Plant at least two or more rows of each variety of corn, during each planting, to ensure successful fertilization and ear and kernel development.

    Spacing

    • Space the corn kernels 9 to 12 inches apart in each row. This will give the corn plants enough room to fully develop as well as ensure sufficient nutrients for each plant. As well, this spacing makes it easier to access corn plants to weed them and add fertilizer as needed. Space the rows 30 to 36 inches apart for the same reason.

    Harvesting

    • Each corn plant will produce at least one good ear of corn as long as adequate growing conditions have been met. In extremely good growing conditions, where the corn plants have been well-spaced and kept free of weeds, along with sufficient nutrients for each plant, the plant may produce a second ear. Harvest the corn about 20 days after the plant has begun silking.
