Picasso Museum on the Road Map of Barcelona

Although Spain is dotted with art museums dedicated to works of Pablo Picasso, the Picasso Museum in Barcelona is the only museum that was built during the lifetime of the famous 20th century Spanish artist. Boasting of one of the largest collections of the artworks of Picasso, the art museum is a major attraction of Barcelona.

Museum Buildings

The museum occupies five adjacent palaces in Montcada Street at the heart of Barcelona. Palau Aguilar, a 13th century palace, was the original seat of the museum. Palau Baro de Castellet, Palau Meca, Palau Finestres and Casa Mauri are the other medieval palaces that constitute the museum. The palaces with their open courtyards with open stairway leading to the main floor housing the art gallery are outstanding examples of medieval Gothic Catalan civil architecture.

What to see in Picasso Museum

Picasso spent his early years as an artist in Barcelona. Despite shifting his base to France, he retained his close association with the city throughout his life. Hence, Barcelona was the painter's obvious choice for building the first art museum dedicated to his works. More than 3,500 artworks of Picasso are displayed in the Picasso Museum. The collection originally comprised of the personal collections of Jaume Sabartes, personal secretary and friend of the painter. Later, art collectors helped to expand the collection further.
