How to Remove Fumes From a New Carpet

    • 1). Ventilate your home by opening all the windows. If it's cold outside, you may need to bundle up for a while or go to another, warmer room.

    • 2). Turn on an overhead fan and plug in any other fans you own. Place one fan in the corner of your room and another near your window. Place the window fan so that the air blowing is facing the window and not inside. This will suck the inside air out.

    • 3). Spread baking soda or a powder cleaner onto the carpet and let it sit for at least one hour. Powder cleaners absorb various scents in carpets.

    • 4). Vacuum the carpet and make sure the vacuum picks up all the powder you spread.

    • 5). Steam clean the carpet with your own (or a rental) steam cleaner or, if necessary, hire a professional to do the job.
