How to Replace Sound in Imac G4

    • 1). Reset the PRAM on the system. This may reset the audio system, if the contents of this system management memory have become corrupted or unreadable. To reset the PRAM, you must press the "command" and "option" keys along with the letters "P" and "R" on your keyboard, while you reboot the system.

    • 2). Insert the 3.5 mm jack of a pair of headphones or computer speakers into and out of the audio port on your iMac multiple ties. Slightly turn it while inserting, and this may help to clear out any obstructions inside the jack. The iMac G4 systems were designed to disable internal audio when headphones or external speakers were connected. If the interior of the jack is obstructed, both internal audio and external speakers could be rendered inoperative.

    • 3). Purchase a USB-to-audio adapter device, such as the Griffin iMic. If the internal audio is not providing any sound output, routing your system audio through a USB port may enable you to bypass the faulty audio components.

    • 4). Take the computer to an Apple retail store or Apple Authorized Service Provider (AASP). Call ahead and determine whether they will be able to help you with your particular model of computer, and make an appointment.
