How to Transfer an iPod Library to Another Computer

    Transferring iTunes with Writable Media

    • 1). Open iTunes.

    • 2). Select the "File" menu, scroll down to "Library" then choose the "Back Up to Disk" option.

    • 3). Choose "Back Up Entire iTunes Library and Playlists" or "Back up only iTunes Store Purchases" from the dialog box and click "Back Up."

    • 4). Insert a blank writable CD or DVD disk. If additional space is needed, iTunes will inform you to prepare additional blank CD or DVD disks.

    • 5). Restore your iTunes library on another computer by opening iTunes and inserting the first backup disk. A dialog box will ask if you would like to restore from the disk. Select Restore and insert additional disks, if necessary, when prompted.

Transferring Purchased Files with an iPod or iPhone

    • 1). Open iTunes on the computer to which you wish to transfer files.

    • 2). Authorize iTunes to access your iTunes Store account: Select the Store menu and click "Authorize." Enter your username and password and click "Authorize."

    • 3). Connect your iPod and wait until the connection is mounted, or read by the computer.

    • 4). If the iPod is in sync with a different computer, a dialog box will appear in iTunes asking if you would like to transfer your purchases. Click "Transfer Purchases." If the iPod is in manual disk mode, or a dialog box does not appear for any other reason, go to the "File" menu and click "Transfer Purchases."

Transfer iTunes Library with an External Hard Drive

    • 1). Open iTunes and click on "Preferences." Navigate to the "Advanced" tab and click "Copy Files to iTunes Media Folder When Adding to Library" button (if not already selected). Click "OK."

    • 2). Open the "File" menu, scroll down to "Library" then click the "Organize Library" option. Apple recommends selecting both "Consolidate Library" and "Upgrade to iTunes Media Organization," then click "OK." Connect the external hard drive and wait until iTunes consolidates library.

    • 3). Navigate to your iTunes folder and drag to the external drive to copy. By default on Mac OS X, the iTunes folder is located in a user's "Music" folder. On Windows XP, Vista and 7, the default location for a user's iTunes folder is inside "My Music." Copy the iTunes folder to new computer. Apple recommends returning the folder to its original location in the "Music" folder. Quit iTunes, if open.

    • 4). Re-launch iTunes, and hold the Shift key (Windows) or the Option key (Mac OS X) before the Library window opens. A dialog box will appear.

    • 5). Select the "Choose Library" button, navigate to the folder housing the new iTunes folder, and click "Choose."
