Homemade Backpacking Foods

    Breakfasts

    • Combine fruit, nuts, dry milk and grains for a high-protein, high-energy trail breakfast. You can opt for hot or cold cereals. Combine 2 1/2 cups each dry cereal, dried fruit and nuts in a quart-size freezer bag. Eat dry or by topping with a mixture of 3 tablespoons dry milk powder to 1 cup cold water. For an alternative savory breakfast, try mixing two packets of instant grits, 2 tbsp. dry milk, 2 tbsp. bacon bits, 1/2 teaspoon each onion powder and dried garlic, and 2 tbsp. shelf-stable cheddar. Combine in a pint-size freezer bag. To prepare, add 1 cup boiling water to the freezer bag and allow to sit for 5 minutes.

    Lunch on the Trail

    • Since you won't have access to a fire at lunch, plan on foods that can be eaten cold. Tortilla wraps are an excellent choice. Carry flour tortillas and individual packets of tuna, mayonnaise, peanut butter, and other shelf-stable, high-protein foods. You may want to include dense and stable sweets to go along with your homemade backpacking lunch. Brownies survive well in the pack, as do the backpacker's favorite, the Snickers bar.

    Dinner at Camp

    • Freezer bag cooking is ideal for camp dinners. It allows you a full, nutritious and warm meal after a long day on the trail. Rely on quick-cooking grains like instant rice, instant potatoes and ramen noodles as the basis of these meals. Combine a grain, dried and dehydrated vegetables, and plenty of seasonings in a freezer bag. You can add dried beef jerky, hummus mix or dehydrated refried beans, or you can carry foil packets of tuna or chicken for additional protein. Add boiling water directly to the freezer bag and allow to sit until cool. Eat and enjoy.

    Snacks

    • Package up a variety of snacks to keep your energy going as you hike. Make your own trail mix or energy bars before you go. You might also package up protein powder-based smoothies. Combine protein powder, dry milk powder, yogurt powder, crushed freeze-dried fruit and vanilla powder. Mix with water on the trail. For a pudding dessert at camp, combine one package instant pudding mix with dried milk in a bag before you leave home. Add small bags of Nutella and chocolate chips. Mix the pudding mix and milk powder with 2 cups of water thoroughly and stir in nutella before stashing somewhere cold, like a nearby stream. When the pudding is chilled, stir in chocolate chips and enjoy.
