How to Troubleshoot an Error in Outlook Express

Error: Can't Connect/Can't Send and Receive Emails

    • 1). Open your computer's Internet browser to see if the program's "Home Page" loads. If the home page doesn't load, proceed to the next step. If websites are loading, skip to step 4.

    • 2). Check your Internet or network connection--Ethernet cable should be plugged. If using a wireless connection, check the signal strength your system's wireless adapter is receiving.

    • 3). Check your computer's modem, router or other network device. The lights on the device should be blinking indicating data being transmitted to the device. If no lights are illuminated, check to see if it has power or reset the device by turning it off and waiting one minute before turning it back on

    • 4). Check your email account settings within Outlook Express. Click "Tools," "Accounts..." Click on the "Mail" tab. Click on your account under the "Account" heading. Click "Properties." Click on the tabs on the dialog box to view your information.

    • 5). Check your computer's firewall to see if it is blocking Outlook Express. Click "Start," "Control Panel," "Windows Firewall." Click on the "Exceptions" tab. There should be a check mark in the box next to the "Outlook Express" entry. If not, click "Add Program" to add the email application to the list. If using a third-party firewall, open the application and click on "Exceptions" to see if Outlook Express is listed.

    • 6). Check your computer's anti-virus program to see if an incoming or outgoing email is being blocked within the program.

    • 7). Check Outlook Express' "Outbox" to see if an outgoing email is stuck in the folder--due to size restriction or another issue. Delete or resend the email.

    • 8). Send yourself a test email to see if errors are still present. If the test email does not transmit and presents an error before leaving Outlook Express' "Outbox," contact your ISP.

Note, damaged incoming mail cannot be resolved within Outlook Express. You need to contact your ISP.

    • 9). Reinstall Outlook Express as a last result, if recommended by your ISP, by using the "Add/Remove Windows Components" utility.

    Error: Server Timeout

    • 4). Click on the "Advanced" tab. Move the slider under the heading "Server Timeouts" slightly to the right. Click "Apply," "OK."
