Oxford is a university town of the highest calibre. It has the oldest English University and many of the buildings are steeped in history. Walk through the many courtyards that have been treaded upon by many well known scholars, intellectuals and celebrities. Or visit Christ Church and the Bodleian Library.

Stratford-upon-Avon is the birthplace of William Shakespeare. You can visit his home that goes back to the period of the Tudor family. Nearby, is the area known the Cotwolds where you will see thatched-roof cottages and quaint inns.

If you want to see a medieval fortress, then visit Warwick Castle. With tremendous towers and ramparts that are very well preserved, you will feel as though you have travelled back in time. Cross the footbridge, visit the dungeons, and climb the spiral staircase to the Princess Tower. Afterward you can stroll through the gardens. In the summer, you can see displays of archery, jousting and even falconry.

There is an endless list of places to see and because England is so small, you can make a day trip to just about any place. You can also find packages online that combine several points of interest in one tour. The entire trip will bring you back the same day and the cost is around what you might save from a single night at a cheap hotel.
