Drainage Around a Basement

    Basement Flooding Consequences

    • Flooding can cause damage to flooring, walls and personal belongings. Additionally, problems with mold and mildew increases the likelihood of respiratory problems, memory loss and other mold-related illnesses. Also a concern is an increase in insurance rates and overall depreciation of property value.

    Downspouts

    • Downspouts should not deposit water near the foundation. It is essential that downspouts reach a minimum of six feet (1.8 meters) from the basement wall. The set up should drain away from your home or any homes nearby. Keeping eaves free of debris will keep water flowing freely and prevent blockages.

    Lot Grading

    • The lot should be graded away from the house and dirt should be added near the house, if necessary, to create a positive slope. As with downspouts, the slope should not direct water towards another home.

    Floodproofing Products

    • A sump pump is an essential piece of equipment for basements which are prone to flooding. The sump pit system includes a sump pit, pump and discharge pipe. The pit is set into the basement floor and collects any water that seeps into the basement. The pump pushes this water outside the home through the pipe. This pipe should dump water somewhere away from the home where it can be absorbed without causing damage.
