How to Submit Photo Prints to Editors & Publishers

    • 1). Obtain a copy of the submission guidelines for photography from the magazine or book publisher you are going to submit to. Follow the guidelines exactly to increase your chance of acceptance.

    • 2). Buy a few copies of the magazine you want to submit to and read them well. Get a good feel for the type of photography that they publish on a regular basis.

    • 3). Write the photography editor of the magazine or book a cover letter. Include your contact information, your photography credits and any other information relevant to your photography. Be sure to make the letter no longer than about two to three paragraphs.

    • 4). Include a contact sheet. This is one sheet of thumb-sized photos to show the editors or publishers your work. Include only your best photos on the contact sheet.

    • 5). Include two to three large 8- by 10-inch prints of your best photos. Be sure the focus is sharp and the exposure is at its best before you submit. Write your contact information on the back of the photos as well.

    • 6). Place the cover letter, contact sheet and full-sized photos and a self-addressed stamped envelope, large enough for the return of your photos, in a large, stiff 8- by 10-inch envelope. Write your name and address and the editor or publisher's name and address on the envelope, and mail it.
