Treating Ringworm

Ringworm is a very common skin condition.
In fact, around twenty percent of the population may be infected by this.
It is common in people who engage in sports activities especially the wrestlers.
Because of its prevalence in the sport of wrestling, wrestlers with ringworm may be disqualified.
This disease does not only afflict humans but also domesticated animals like cats, dogs, sheep and cattle.
Before going to the process of diagnosis and treatment, it is important that we gain sufficient knowledge about this skin condition first.
For starters, ringworm is not caused by a worm.
It is actually an infection caused by fungi.
So there's no need to worry that a worm has infiltrated your skin and caused a round rash.
This skin infection is also called tinea.
The round or ring-shaped rash that it leaves is the reason why it's called ringworm.
The word worm was adapted because the round-shaped rash looks like a worm that is right underneath the skin.
Plus, the edges of the rash are raised, making it really look like a worm just under the skin.
Because of these features, people initially believed that the skin condition is caused by a round worm that's why it was and still is called ringworm.
Actually, the condition's official name is tinea but ringworm is still more popular until now because people have already gotten used to it.
As stated earlier, it is very important to gain ample knowledge on the condition first before looking for treatments and medications.
Now that we already know that the rash is not caused by a worm but by fungi, we can treat the infection by going after the infectants.
And because the infection is caused by fungi, topical anti-fungal medications such as Miconazole, Terbinafine, Clotrimazole, Ketconazole or Tolnaftate are recommended.
Fortunately, with the proper medication, this skin disease is very easy to cure.
But just like any disease, the best cure is prevention.
To prevent this skin infection, avoid sharing clothes, towels, sheets or sports gear.
Walking barefoot should also be avoided in places like the beach, public bathrooms, locker rooms and the likes.
And if you notice some bald spots in your pets, do not touch them with your bare hands and take them to the vet to be treated.
If you are ever exposed to ringworm, wash the affected area with an anti-fungal soap immediately.
By following these preventive tips, being infected with these fungi will be highly unlikely.
