Food for Gout Relief

    Fruits

    • Cherries and other dark-colored fruits are believed to help keep uric-acid levels down. Cherries and other dark berries and fruits may also relieve gout symptoms because of their antiinflammatory properties. The enzyme bromelain and vitamin C are both helpful in reducing gout. The best food for getting both is pineapple. Vitamin C supplements are not recommended since it's easy to get too much, which can elevate uric-acid levels. Other sources of vitamin C include oranges, strawberries and kiwi.

    Fluids

    • Drinking eight to 10 glasses of water daily is recommended to flush uric acid more efficiently. In addition to drinking plenty of water, a little coffee can help too. Coffee drinkers have lower uric acid levels. It is not the caffeine in coffee that helps; decaf drinkers have lower levels too. According to Johns Hopkins University Medical Center, researchers have discovered that the antioxidant chlorogenic acid in coffee is responsible for lower uric-acid levels.

    Unsaturated Fats

    • Unsaturated fats can lower levels of uric acid. These beneficial fats are found in fatty fish like tuna and salmon, nuts and seeds including flaxseed, and in olive oil. Avocados are also a good source of healthy, unsaturated fat.
