What is Chronic Inflammation and How Can You Reduce It?

To many people inflammation is looked upon with negative connotation and rightfully so because the pain associated with it can be so intense and prolonged that there seems to be no hope for relief. Interestingly, inflammation is the body's natural mechanism used to fight off infection and painful stimuli and begin the all important healing process. In fact, without it, there would not be any healing at all.

What is chronic inflammation? There are two types of inflammation - acute and chronic. Acute is a sudden onset of inflammation caused by an injury to the body's tissue whereas chronic is prolonged over time; it can last weeks, months, and perhaps years. The inflammation is caused by the body's immune system trying to repair the damaged tissue. During this process the immune system releases, via the blood, proteins known as cytokines. There are two kinds of cytokines, ones that assist the body in repairing damaged tissue and those that are bad that cause damage to cell tissue.

So when we stub our toe, for example, we may experience acute inflammation. The body is releasing cytokines to heal the affected tissue. However, during chronic inflammation, good cytokines are released to repair the cell tissue but at the same time there is also a release of bad cytokines that cause serious harm to the body; this imbalance of cytokines causes what is known as an autoimmune disorder. Autism, antiphospholipid syndrome, Crohn's disease, eczema, Graves' disease, hepatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, Parkinson's disease, psoriasis, and rheumatoid arthritis are all examples of an autoimmune disorder.

As we grow older, it becomes increasing harder for our body to balance the good from the bad inflammation and because of this we get chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and stroke which seems to come about on a more regular basis. In order for us to experience only the €good inflammation,€ we need to control the release of these cytokines that the body produces to prevent future tissue damage.
