Knowing Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids is an alteration in the gastrointestinal system where there is dilatation of the venous plexus (a network of veins) surrounding the rectal and anal area.
The term "hemorrhoids" means a cushion of tissue filled with blood between the anus and rectum.
These dilatations are common among people with problems in bowel straining or have increased pressure in bowel straining.
Hemorrhoids may be related to other venous abnormalities like varicosities.
The enlarged venous sacs protrude towards the rectal and anal canals where it is then exposed; thromboses, ulceration and bleeding may then develop.
What are the common signs and symptoms of hemorrhoids 1.
Presence of swollen and bulged skin tissues in the anal and rectal canals 2.
Pain and Irritation in the anal area especially during defecation 3.
Bright red bleeding during defecation 4.
Blood loss resulting to iron deficiency anemia Types of hemorrhoids according to severity Type 1 - Presence of bleeding but no protrusion Type 2 - Presence of protrusion either with or without bleeding that retracts by itself Type 3 - Presence of protrusion but must be pushed by a finger Type 4 - Presence of protrusion and cannot be pushed back in.
What are the common causes of hemorrhoids 1.
Constipation and Diarrhea - prolonged bowel straining time causes more and more pressure to build up within the venous plexus especially when you are defecating very hard stools due to constipation.
2.
Sedentary lifestyle - people with prolonged sitting time are predisposed to this condition.
3.
Obesity - overweight persons needs more effort in straining but with poor muscle tone and posture, more pressure would be applied in the rectal and anal area.
4.
Pregnancy - hemorrhoids is very common among pregnant women due to a relative increase in blood pressure which increases straining during bowel movements.
How to know if you have hemorrhoids? A direct inspection by a physician is necessary in order to rule out if it is really a haemorrhoid or a different gastrointestinal problem.
The physician will have to inspect the affected area with his fingers and the help of a lubricant to easy insertion.
An anoscope or a protoscope may be used to provide better details regarding the hemorrhoid.
How to prevent hemorrhoids? 1.
Proper exercise - in order to lose weight and prevent hypertension 2.
Have a better posture when straining 3.
Make sure you are drinking enough amounts of water per day to avoid constipation 4.
Eat foods high in fiber 5.
Do not eat foods that are difficult to digest.
6.
Try to have stretching exercise while standing after sitting for long periods of time.
7.
Have a regular check up with your family physician Are there any surgical interventions for hemorrhoids? 1.
Rubber band ligation - application of elastic bands so that the blood supply towards the haemorrhoid is cut off 2.
Hemorrhoidolysis - dries up the hemorrhoid for easier interventions later on 3.
Sclerotherapy - application of sclerosants to harden up hemorrhoids so that they would collapse and dry up 4.
Hemorrhoidectomy - surgical incision (cutting off) of hemorrhoids.
